Leadership Macon Celebrates 2019 Graduation

Leadership Macon provides training and community orientation to individuals seeking to become more involved in the growth and development of Macon-Bibb County. The year-long program introduces a class of upcoming influencers to the strengths and challenges in Macon-Bibb County. The 2019 Class graduated on November 12, 2019. They celebrated their accomplishments, reflected on experiences, and gained important leadership advice from Dr. Kirby Godsey, Chancellor of Mercer. Class speakers included Ansley Booker and Walter Stafford. Classmates got a first-hand look into the community’s healthcare facilities and education system. They observed local government leaders and developed a better understanding of ongoing community initiatives. Among these experiences, the 2019 Class raised funds and support for the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park. Learn more about this on-going project here. Congratulations, Class of 2019! ...

Alumni Spotlight: Suzanne Beers – Class of 1995

I recently spoke with alumni Suzanne Beers about her year in the Leadership Macon class of 1995.  She said it was a great learning experience for her and that the information presented about Macon was so enlightening.  With her desire to make a difference, she went on to be involved with many other community organizations.  Amazingly, she was expecting her first child during her year in the class.  She had the baby in August of that year and never missed a beat.  Now that’s dedication! At about the same time, Suzanne became a member of The Junior League of Macon and was an active member for 10 years.  During her membership, she held various leadership positions including Treasurer, Provisional Development Chair, Nominating Chair and Project Research Chair.  As Chair of Project Research, she and her committee did extensive research looking for an opportunity in the community where the Junior League could make a major impact with money and volunteers.   As a...

Alumni Spotlight: Jim McLendon – Class of 1979

I had the pleasure recently to visit with Leadership Macon alumni Jim McLendon who was a member of the very first Leadership Macon class in 1979. In reflecting back to the early days of LM, Jim spoke about how the Leadership Macon concept was formulated mainly by Charlie Jay. The first LM class consisted of monthly meetings in which different community leaders spoke to the group about local community issues. At that time, the meetings were very general and did not delve as deeply into the issues as is the case today. Jim added that while he didn’t know all of his classmates at the beginning of the year, they all became friends and many have stayed in touch over the years. In addition, going through the Leadership Macon class encouraged Jim to be more involved in community activities which has continued for over 30 years! Immediately following his year in Leadership Macon, Jim was asked to be a part of...
